What is a stock?
Learn what it means to own a share of a company and why people buy stocks.
A small piece of a company
A stock, also called a share, is a small piece of ownership in a company. If a company is divided into one million shares and you buy one thousand, you own 0.1% of that company.
When you own a share, you are not lending money to the company. You are a part owner. If the company grows and becomes more valuable, your share usually becomes more valuable too. If the company struggles, your share can lose value.

A simple example
Imagine a bakery worth 100,000 manat, divided into 100 shares. Each share is worth about 1,000 manat. Over the years, the bakery opens two more shops and becomes worth 200,000 manat. Now each share is worth about 2,000 manat. As a part owner, you shared in that growth.
Now imagine instead that a big competitor opens next door and the bakery loses customers. Its value drops to 60,000 manat. Your share is now worth about 600 manat. Owning a business means sharing in both the good and the bad.
What owners usually get
A share of growth. If the company becomes more valuable, so does your stake.
Possible dividends. Some companies share part of their profit with owners in cash.
A vote. Shareholders can usually vote on important company decisions, such as choosing the board of directors. With a few shares your vote is small, but it exists.
What you do not get
You do not get a guaranteed profit. You do not get your money back if the company fails. In a bankruptcy, lenders are paid first, and shareholders often receive nothing. This is why stocks carry more risk than a bank deposit.
Why people buy stocks
Over long periods, shares of good companies have been one of the best ways to grow savings faster than inflation. But this growth comes with ups and downs, sometimes large ones. Stocks make the most sense for money you will not need for many years.
