Brief for tonight
Faros | Market Brief — October 22, 2026
Brief
- Azerbaijan: The government approved a low-carbon development strategy targeting net-zero emissions by 2060. The plan covers energy, transport, industry and oil and gas. Trend.Az
- Energy and geopolitics: Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have heightened supply concerns. Brent crude rose 3.2% intraday to $112.33 a barrel on October 22, in a Reuters snapshot at 17:05 GMT (21:05 Baku time). Higher oil prices could add to inflationary pressure; that is an analysis of the potential market impact. Reuters
- Stocks: Meta’s revenue beat expectations, but its plan to issue a new class of non-voting shares to help fund AI spending unsettled investors. Technology and semiconductor shares weighed on the indexes. AP reported that most S&P 500 stocks were higher even as declines in large technology companies pulled the index down. The U.S. trading session is still underway in Baku time. Reuters
- Europe: France’s 10-year government bond yield rose above 5%, while its spread over German Bunds approached 180 basis points. The budget deficit and political deadlock are raising borrowing costs. Reuters
- Ukraine: Moscow said it was ready to resume U.S.-mediated talks next month; Kyiv said it hoped they would take place in early November. This is not yet an agreement, and fighting continues.
Stocks
United States
Reuters’ 17:41 Baku-time snapshot showed the Dow at 52,716.35 points (−0.26%), the S&P 500 at 7,694.03 (−0.81%), and the Nasdaq at 26,312.94 (−1.46%). In a later snapshot at 18:45 Baku time, losses had deepened: the Dow was down 0.6%, the S&P 500 1.4%, and the Nasdaq 2.2%. These are intraday readings, not closing prices; the U.S. session was still underway.
This was not a day when all stocks fell equally. At 17:41, decliners slightly outnumbered advancers and six S&P 500 sectors were lower. The Nasdaq recorded 151 new 52-week lows against 31 new highs. AP’s 18:45 update, however, said most S&P 500 stocks were rising. Analysis: the indexes’ sharp declines largely reflected the heavy weight of large technology and AI-related companies; the average stock held up better than the headline indexes. Reuters
- Meta (META): −6.4% at 18:45 Baku time, intraday. Revenue and its next-quarter sales outlook beat expectations, but profit was weaker. Meta expects full-year AI capital expenditure of $135–145 billion; free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion in the third quarter. The company also announced a new class of non-voting shares that could help fund AI spending and other needs. A $25 billion fine imposed by a New Mexico court was another negative headline. Revenue growth could help justify AI investment, but investors are now focused on when that investment will translate into cash flow and how further financing could affect shareholders. The next test is whether free cash flow recovers as advertising revenue grows. Reuters
- Tesla (TSLA): +0.1% at 18:45 Baku time, intraday; it was down about 1.9% in Reuters’ earlier 17:41 snapshot. Quarterly profit beat expectations, but revenue came in below forecasts. Tesla cut its 2026 capital-expenditure forecast from more than $25 billion to about $20 billion. Lower-than-expected AI and robotics spending helped free cash flow turn positive. Investors could read this as stronger spending discipline or as a slowdown in future growth plans. Tesla’s high valuation and potential regulatory obstacles to a SpaceX merger add to the stock’s sensitivity; the market will look for clearer evidence that its investments can generate returns. Reuters
- AI and semiconductor stocks: Nvidia was down 3.8% and Lam Research 9.7% at 18:45. Lam’s quarterly revenue and profit narrowly beat estimates, but its forecast for the next quarter was weaker; the stock had risen about 52% year to date up to that point. Reuters’ earlier snapshot showed Intel down 5.3%, while AMD, Qualcomm, Marvell, Broadcom and Micron had fallen between 1.9% and 5.2%. Analysis: investors are testing whether AI equipment demand will turn into revenue and margins—and whether expectations embedded in high valuations have become too optimistic. Next, watch semiconductor orders and profitability, as well as hyperscalers’ investment reports. AP News
- CoreWeave (CRWV): −7.1% at 18:45 Baku time, intraday. The company borrows to buy Nvidia chips and rents them to cloud customers. That means financing costs and access to capital remain risks even if demand for AI infrastructure stays strong. CoreWeave illustrates how the AI growth story is tied to credit markets. AP News
- Defence and consumer staples: Lockheed Martin was up 9.4% in Reuters’ 17:41 Baku-time snapshot after raising its annual sales and profit forecasts. Procter & Gamble rose 5.8% in AP’s 18:45 snapshot and stood by its full-year outlook. These results offer evidence of earnings growth beyond technology, though strength in two companies does not establish a broad market rally. Reuters
Europe
European markets were already closed, but Reuters’ latest timestamped snapshot, at 12:55 Baku time, showed the STOXX 600 at 638.38 points, down 0.95%. This was an intraday reading, not the closing level. Higher energy prices, stress in French government bonds and mixed earnings were weighing on the market. Reuters
- Barclays: The stock recovered earlier losses and was little changed in Reuters’ snapshot. Quarterly pretax profit missed market expectations. The bank also said it would cut about 5,000 positions this year, roughly 5% of its workforce. The European banking index was down 2.7%, suggesting sector concerns extended beyond one bank’s results. Reuters
- Hermès: −7.3%. Quarterly revenue narrowly missed expectations, adding to weakness in the luxury sector. Nestlé: +1.2%. Organic sales growth beat forecasts, and food and beverage stocks were among the few sectors to rise on the day. Reuters
- European technology: ASML, Infineon and STMicroelectronics fell between 2.8% and 3.6%; SAP was down 1% and BE Semiconductor 3.1%. UCB rose 12.2% after raising its 2026 outlook, citing demand for its Bimzelx and Cimzia medicines. In technology and luxury, earnings and valuation concerns weighed on shares; UCB’s gain was supported by specific product demand. Reuters
One factor to watch is the U.S. third-quarter earnings outlook: according to LSEG, the forecast for earnings growth rose from 30.7% to 32.3%. But today’s reaction suggests investors are also asking whether AI spending, orders and future cash flow will support that growth. Reuters
ETFs
The latest flows in ETFIQ’s weekly table, covering October 15–21, were reported through October 20 for several funds. They should not be treated as today’s flows.
Fund | Latest reported net flow | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
SPY — S&P 500 | +$6.2bn, through Oct. 20 | Demand for large U.S. companies |
SOXL — semiconductors | +$5.3bn, through Oct. 20 | Positions in a high-risk chip-sector fund |
QQQM — Nasdaq-100 | +$895m, in a weekly window with incomplete trading days | Inflows to large technology and growth stocks |
SGOV — 0–3-month Treasury bills | +$875m, through Oct. 20 | Flows into short-term, lower price-sensitivity instruments |
TLT — Treasuries over 20 years | −$2.5bn, through Oct. 20 | Outflows from long-duration bonds |
IWM — U.S. small caps | −$2.0bn, through Oct. 20 | Caution about small-company financing and growth risks |
HYG — high-yield corporate bonds | −$1.2bn, through Oct. 20 | More cautious demand for lower-rated credit |
ETF flows are calculated from changes in a fund’s shares outstanding. They are not the same as price returns and do not identify which investors bought or sold. A fund can receive inflows while its price falls. So earlier inflows into SPY and SOXL do not confirm a recovery in today’s weak technology market; flow data may also be reported with a delay. ETFIQ
- SPY tracks the S&P 500, weighted by market capitalization. If earnings growth broadens across more sectors and energy risks ease, the fund could receive support across a wider range of stocks. If the market remains dependent on a handful of mega-cap companies, index movements may remain concentrated in those names.
- QQQM tracks the Nasdaq-100. Today’s 2.2% Nasdaq decline and selling in mega-cap technology stocks highlight the risks of its concentrated structure. If cloud and AI revenue justify investment, the upside case strengthens; otherwise, valuations remain sensitive to expectations for future earnings. Invesco U.S.
- SOXL aims to deliver three times the daily move of a semiconductor index. Its return over several days may not be three times the index’s return, and daily rebalancing can magnify losses in volatile markets. Strong chip forecasts and AI orders could accelerate gains; weaker guidance could also accelerate declines. Large inflows point to increased short-term positioning, but do not prove long-term conviction. Direxion
- TLT holds long-dated U.S. Treasuries and is sensitive to long-term yields. The intraday drop in U.S. 10-year yields could support TLT; renewed increases in yields driven by inflation, oil or government borrowing could work against it. SGOV, which tracks 0–3-month Treasury bills, is less price-sensitive; its yield is more likely to reset as short-term rates change. TLT

The yen strengthened as investors sought safety. For the euro, French sovereign-debt concerns and protests remain headwinds. France’s 10-year yield had risen to 5.089% earlier in the day, above the U.S. equivalent at that time; the France–Germany 10-year yield spread reached 177.7 basis points. This illustrates that the euro is influenced not only by the dollar’s movement but also by sovereign risk within Europe. The Guardian
Money markets: The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was 5.01% in the 18:45 Baku-time snapshot, down from 5.13% late on Tuesday. That move is consistent with demand for safer assets. However, long-term borrowing costs remain high. A fall in initial jobless claims reinforced expectations that the Fed could leave rates unchanged next week, while higher oil prices could renew inflation concerns. AP News
Cryptocurrency
Crypto trades 24/7, so these are intraday prices, not closing prices.
Asset | Price and 24-hour move | Baku time |
|---|---|---|
Bitcoin (BTC) | $81,782.96; −3.29% | 18:22 |
Ethereum (ETH) | $2,399.99; −4.56% | 17:07 |
Solana (SOL) | $104.35; −3.80% | 19:33 |
XRP | $1.322; −4.34% | 18:37 |
The source’s 24-hour ranges were $81,395.99–$84,900 for BTC and $2,396–$2,525 for ETH. Prices were approaching the lower ends of those ranges, consistent with risk aversion. BTC and ETH fell alongside technology stocks today. Reuters identified weaker risk sentiment, higher oil prices and doubts about AI profitability as factors weighing on markets. MEXC
ETF flows provide a different signal from price action. Farside’s latest completed U.S. trading-day data, for October 21, showed net inflows of $524.8 million into spot Bitcoin ETFs, $14.9 million into Ethereum ETFs and $0.6 million into Solana ETFs. Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $1.075 billion in total inflows over October 19–21. Finalized ETF flow data for October 22 was not yet available. Farside Investors
Analysis: BTC fell 3.3% despite strong ETF inflows, suggesting that institutional fund demand did not outweigh broader selling pressure that day. A single day of positive flows into ETH does not offset the outflows of the two preceding days; the $0.6 million inflow into Solana funds is also small relative to SOL’s 3.8% decline. The flows are a positive signal, but price action has not yet confirmed it.
On the network side, Solana activated its Alpenglow consensus upgrade on October 21. The Solana Foundation’s target is to reduce transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds; that target still needs to be confirmed by real-world network performance. SOL’s decline shows that a technical upgrade does not automatically generate demand. Solana
On regulation, the OCC announced its final rule under the GENIUS Act on October 21; it is due to take effect on January 18, 2027. AP’s explanation says stablecoin issuers may not pay interest directly to token holders, although exchanges may pass rewards to customers in eligible cases. This could affect stablecoin revenue models, but does not mean every platform will offer yield or that deposits will flow out of banks on a large scale. OCC
Volatility is elevated, as the BTC price range shows. However, no reliable, precisely timestamped data on overall futures positioning or forced liquidations has been confirmed for this brief, so the decline is not attributed to leveraged liquidations. Next, watch whether ETF inflows persist, technology markets stabilize, BTC holds the day’s lows, and the Solana upgrade delivers measurable gains in network use.
