AI Rally Drives Markets
Hi. The U.S. session is open: it is 12:42 p.m. in New York, with the close due at midnight Baku time. The latest precise U.S. index snapshot below is from 20:36 Baku time. European cash markets are closed; selected European stock moves are delayed near-close figures from 19:08 Baku time.
Brief
AzerEnerji and the World Bank discussed progress on Azerbaijan’s AZURE renewable-energy project today. Its objectives include modernizing high-voltage transmission so private renewable generation can connect to the grid. This is a long-term infrastructure development; today’s discussion does not mean new generating capacity is already online. report.az
Stocks
U.S. gains are led by technology and semiconductors, but participation is uneven. At 20:36 Baku time, Reuters reported the Dow at 52,628.04 points (+0.25%), the S&P 500 at 7,748.13 (+0.46%), and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,701.12 (+1.05%). The S&P information-technology sector and semiconductor index were each up 1.3%. Earlier, at 17:54 Baku time, advancing stocks outnumbered decliners on both the NYSE and Nasdaq, but Nasdaq-listed stocks at 52-week lows still exceeded those at highs. Read-through: the tech rebound had some breadth, yet it had not erased the market’s weaker undercurrent. Reuters
The main catalyst is fresh evidence of AI infrastructure demand. SpaceX was up 9.8% and Super Micro Computer (SMCI) 10.3% in Reuters’ 20:36 snapshot. SpaceX reported its first profit as a public company; Elon Musk’s comments about a possible Tesla combination also helped the stock. SMCI forecast quarterly revenue and margins above Wall Street expectations. HPE rose 2.2% and Dell 4.5%, while CoreWeave was marginally lower. Analysis: server demand looks resilient, but stronger orders do not yet prove that AI investment is generating adequate returns for customers. Credit-market stress, heavy capital spending and high expectations remain risks. The SpaceX–Tesla idea is not a completed deal; terms and outcome are unconfirmed. Reuters
Nvidia is also in focus. Its integrated Vera Rubin DSX system aims to reduce AI data-center deployment from months to as little as two weeks. That could ease a buildout bottleneck, but it does not establish customer orders or project returns. Meta and Tesla are due to report after the U.S. close. Investors will look at Meta’s ability to monetize AI spending through advertising and at Tesla’s auto margins and funding needs for newer businesses. www.wsj.com
The counterpoint: AT&T fell 6.3%, Netflix 1.8%, and Alphabet 1.9%. Netflix posted third-quarter revenue of $12.87 billion, but its fourth-quarter profit outlook disappointed and its 2026 advertising-revenue forecast was cut from about $3 billion to $2.7 billion. The market is scrutinizing the quality and durability of growth, not just whether revenue is rising. Reuters
Europe: earnings are offsetting political and macro risks. Cash markets are closed. A delayed near-close snapshot at 19:08 Baku time showed the STOXX Europe 600 at 643.7 points, up about 0.79%. Randstad rose 21.26%, EssilorLuxottica 16.11%, Carrefour fell 13.31%, and Michelin declined 6.80%. Earlier Reuters reporting showed DSV up 7.9% after its quarterly results. www.boursorama.com
Randstad’s third-quarter organic revenue grew 3.9%, above the 2.9% consensus. EssilorLuxottica’s constant-currency revenue rose 7.2%, beating expectations, although smart-glasses sales growth slowed to 20% from about 100% in the prior quarter. Carrefour cut its annual outlook, warning that unrest and store disruption in France could cost €80–200 million in operating income. Michelin fell after reporting lower nine-month sales. DSV’s revenue and EBIT before special items rose, but property-sale proceeds also helped cash flow; execution of the Schenker integration remains a watchpoint. Analysis: a positive index does not mean broad company strength; earnings dispersion and French political risk are driving large stock-level differences. www.reuters.com
ETFs
The latest completed U.S. ETF-flow data run through October 20; October 21 flows are not final while the U.S. session remains open. For the week of October 14–20, ETFIQ recorded $7.0 billion of inflows to SOXL, $4.8 billion to SPY and $1.4 billion to TQQQ. QQQ saw $3.7 billion of outflows, TLT $2.7 billion, and the equal-weight S&P 500 fund RSP $701 million. The pattern does not confirm a uniform rush into technology or the broader market. ETFIQ
Over the month to October 20, IVV took in $31.9 billion and SPY $26.5 billion. Over three months, SGOV attracted $17.5 billion and TLT $7.1 billion. TLT’s positive three-month flow alongside its latest weekly outflow illustrates how positioning can change over shorter windows. ICI’s latest official weekly report, ending October 14, showed $53.26 billion of net ETF inflows; that period is older and should not be confused with the October 20 flow data. Flows measure fund-unit creations and redemptions; they do not by themselves forecast prices. ETFIQ
Conditional scenarios: SPY and IVV could benefit if earnings growth broadens, though their market-cap weighting lets a few mega-cap companies dominate returns. QQQ and SOXX could gain if AI spending translates into revenue and cash flow; higher rates or weak returns on AI investment could weigh on them. SOXL and TQQQ use daily leverage, so large inflows are not evidence of durable, unlevered conviction. TLT may benefit if long yields fall, but rising yields create duration losses. SGOV has low duration exposure through 0–3-month Treasury bills; its income would reset lower if short-term rates decline. www.invesco.com
FX & money markets
At 18:52 Baku time, Reuters’ FX snapshot showed the DXY at 101.76, EUR/USD at 1.1224, AUD/USD around 0.702, and USD/JPY at 158.04. Sterling was described as steady at that time; earlier, at 13:40 Baku time, GBP/USD was 1.3392. At the earlier snapshot, USD/CHF was 0.8252, USD/CAD 1.4053, and NZD/USD 0.5686. These are intraday observations from different times, not closing rates. UK September inflation reached 3.5%, above the 3.4% forecast, leaving markets almost fully priced for a 25-basis-point Bank of England hike in November. French political and fiscal concerns weighed on the euro, while hawkish RBA comments supported the Australian dollar. reuters.com
U.S. Treasury yields were around 4.77% for two-year notes and 5.10% for ten-year notes intraday. The result of a $13 billion 20-year bond auction was due at 21:00 Baku time and could influence longer yields and duration-sensitive funds such as TLT. Azerbaijan’s official October 21 rates were AZN 1.7000 per U.S. dollar, AZN 1.9082 per euro, and AZN 2.0619 per 100 Russian rubles. wsj.com
Crypto
Crypto trades around the clock. Binance public price pages showed approximately BTC at $84,640 (page updated 20:21 Baku time), ETH at $2,506.5, and SOL at $108.28 around the 20:42 Baku snapshot. These are intraday prices, not closes. binance.com
Flows only partly confirm the price strength. On the latest completed U.S. session, October 20, spot Bitcoin ETFs received $23.2 million net, while Ethereum funds lost $26.1 million and Solana funds $2.65 million. Bitcoin’s inflow was much smaller than the $526.7 million received the previous day. October 21 flows are not final while U.S. trading is open. So BTC price and flows point in the same direction, but the latest flow was modest; ETH and SOL prices rose while their ETF products continued to see withdrawals. All Data (US$m)
Solana’s Alpenglow consensus upgrade becoming active on mainnet is a separate technical catalyst; its target is to cut finality from 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds. That is a meaningful performance test, but not yet evidence of sustained token demand. Stablecoin supply indicators also point to caution: reported USDT and USDC supply fell over October 14–21, though that alone does not prove exchange selling. Next catalysts include Meta and Tesla results, rates and energy prices, next week’s Fed decision, ETF-flow persistence and real-world use of the Solana upgrade. solana.com
